I wasn't sure whether to dismiss it entirely or dive deeper.

And honestly? I chose dismissal and moved on with my life.

But Human Design wouldn't leave me alone. My corner of the Internet and Social Media in those days, early in the pandemic, was absolutely FULL of HD content. And to be perfectly honest, some of it was fascinating, but a lot felt repetitive or surface-level.

But one thing was for sure - some people LOVED it, and others absolutely HATED it.

I kept hearing the same criticisms: cultural appropriation, money-grabbing schemes, generic descriptions that could apply to anyone.

(And honestly? People definitely seemed to be making good money teaching it!)

But I remembered one of the most transformative principles that I live my life by, which I got from one of my earliest mentors: The D to C principle.

So I went from Dismissive... to Curious.

A lot of people seemed to really resonate with the system, and to be honest, it seemed like none of the detractors really understood it.

(Which is exactly what I found when I used the D to C principle with Astrology a decade and a half ago - deep diving into it in order to prove it wrong...

.. and coming away a believer.)

So I set out on a quest to learn everything I could about Human Design, and its more mystical sidekick, the Gene Keys...

... and ran into a big, fat paywall.

Multiple paywalls. $30 for a "generated PDF report". $300 for an individual reading. And $3000 for a "Certification course". Lots of people were making lots of money on this system, that was for sure!

But what I couldn't find out, from the Google machine, or any of the books I ordered from Amazon or found in crystal shops - was how it actually worked - how the chart calculators online turned the information from your birth chart into a so-called "body graph" chart, or where the Gates even were in the sky!

And so I continued my quest to figure out how this shit works - without paying a ton of money or signing any contracts promising to not disclose any secrets.

Because to me, if it's factual, it should be repeatable. And if it's a real system that the Universe gave us (via this weird Canadian dude and his extraterrestrial Voice companion) - the idea of putting a price tag and a patent on it didn't sit right with me.

So I've spent hundreds of hours studying, correlating, reverse-engineering, crunching, and

ing. And yes, I've spent a few (thousand) bucks on courses and readings.

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a system that maps how cosmic patterns affect your personal energy. It combines astrology, the I Ching, chakras, and Kabbalah into one framework that shows your unique energetic blueprint.

The basic idea is that planetary positions when you were born created an imprint on your energy system - kind of like your cosmic operating system. The system uses 64 gates (from the I Ching) mapped to specific zodiac degrees to create your personal "bodygraph."

Whether you believe in neutrino streams or think it's all psychological, people find it useful for understanding their patterns.

What are the Gene Keys?

The Gene Keys is Richard Rudd's take on the 64 gates. He was one of the early Human Design teachers who created his own system using the same foundational structure.

Instead of focusing on mechanics, the Gene Keys approach is more contemplative. Each gate gets three frequencies - a shadow (the challenging aspect), a gift (the potential), and a siddhi (the transcendent possibility).

It's beautiful, poetic work that's helpful for understanding the deeper meaning behind the gates, though it's quite different from the original HD transmission.

Isn't Human Design "Cultural Appropriation"?

No. Human Design synthesizes systems that are openly shared - the I Ching, Western Hermetic Kabbalah, astrology, and chakras. None of these are closed practices.

The confusion usually comes from people not understanding what Human Design actually incorporates, or mixing up Hermetic Kabbalah (which is open) with Jewish mystical practices (which can be closed).

Cultural appropriation involves taking closed or sacred practices without permission. HD uses mathematical and philosophical frameworks that have been shared across cultures for centuries.
